“Straight news reporters have to work within many important conventions. These both limit the scope of their work but are equally critical to doing that work properly and effectively. I was reminded of this when reading last night’s blockbuster report in The Washington Post.

The kernel of the Post report is a much more total and dramatic report of something we knew more tenuously in near contemporaneous reports a month ago: that President Trump had himself been involved in crafting the original statement that his son Don Jr. released in response to the original New York Times report about his June 2016 meeting with that Russia lawyer. That alone represented a stunning failure on the part of his aides. Since they implicated the President in both the knowledge of those events and whatever misstatements were included in the response to them – something with possibly severe legal implications. What the Post now reports is that not only was Trump the apparently sole author of the false statement – he apparently dictated the copy – but that he overruled his top aides and advisors to construct that false statement.

This is a fact of immense consequence.

Based around that central nugget of news are several other points which become clear on reading. One is the Kushner team’s interest in transparency. This is not credible, to put it mildly. That doesn’t mean the factual account is untrue in its narrow particulars. It may have been Kushner lawyer Abbe Lowell’s strategy with the particular evidence of this meeting or in conversations with the Post for this story. But the global message is hardly credible…”

And we know how that turned out. So you could say that Trump is nothing but surprises. But Trump is also highly predictable. He promised repeatedly during the campaign that he could be presidential. But by early 2016 it was clear that he couldn’t, that no change would ever come. Chaos was going to be the norm. The question was always whether that chaos was controlled or not. More and more, “not” looks like the answer. Increasingly, Trump looks like Slim Pickens riding down with the missile, on the cusp of the final, sudden acceleration.

Trump appears to trust none of his staffers at this point, apart from close family, and that family gives dubious advice. Recall that son-in-law Jared Kushner was among those pressing for Trump to fire James Comey, while Bannon was among those counseling restraint. Following Kushner’s advice led Trump right into a prolonged date with Robert Mueller. This time, opposing the decision to hire Scaramucci were Spicer, Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, and Bannon. Supporting it was, yes, Kushner, Ivanka Trump, and—according to reports—Hope Hicks.

If Trump insists on disregarding sound advice from his staffers in favor of dumb advice from family, his decisions will get worse, not that they were great to begin with, and more and more people will leave the White House only to be replaced by less competent hires. While the lure of the White House is huge and someone will always say yes to a job there, the quality of newcomers is going to plummet. People see how poorly Trump treats his hires. (This wasn’t so clear back when Trump was in the private sector, and employees had to sign onerous non-disclosure agreements.) When they displease him, he lets it be known in public. This week, he even told The New York Times that he regretted making Jeff Sessions attorney general…”

Trump won’t visit the states that didn’t vote for him – for obvious reasons:

“President Trump seems to believe he is president only of something called the Red States of America.

Since taking office, Trump has conducted campaign-like rallies in Iowa, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Florida. He carried all four states in 2016, and while Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Florida are all legitimate swing states, not one could be honestly described as blue. In fact, the only reasons Trump has even set foot in truly blue states since his inauguration was for military ceremonies in Virginia, Connecticut, and Maryland, to visit his New Jersey golf resort, to give a graduation speech at hard-right Liberty University in Virginia, and to meet with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at a New York City military museum.

The idea of addressing or appealing to the wide swath of people who live in these blue states seems never to have occurred to our president. They are just golfover states to him.

There’s another striking thing about President Trump’s treks in office in comparison to the early days of Obama — he is not acting like the situation facing the country is nearly as serious as he says it is, and he is not doing much to press the agenda he and his allies claim is critical to a national turnaround.
