President* Donald J. Trump has long admired the world’s dictators and often tries to emulate them, but his despotic delusions of grandeur will never come to fruition because he’s too incompetent and corrupt.

Ever in awe of other despots, Trump’s despotic disposition was again made evident during what was supposed to be a private meeting during his 100th golfing vacation stay during his first 406 days in office at his Mar-a-Lago resort when he learned that President Xi Jinping of China could stay in power indefinitely if his Communist Party successfully amended its Constitution to end term limits. A leaked audio recording from a private speech to donors after a Pennsylvania campaign rally revealed Trump acknowledging how great he thought Xi’s power play was and being met with raucous applause from his supporters when he lamented about giving that a shot someday.

The Donald certainly likes to bully and talk tough while trying to act authoritarian but so far – thanks in no part to the GOP-controlled Congress which keeps trying to cover up his repetitive criminal endeavors – he has been unable to actually become dictatorial because the majority that doesn’t support him as well as the states and the courts have resoundingly resisted him and his initiatives.

For Trump, losing the popular vote despite winning the Electoral College nullified the mandate that he erroneously believed he had. Trump’s ‘winning’ the election was totally unexpected for a multitude of reasons, including – but not limited to – lower Democratic voter turnout, disillusionment with America’s corrupt political system and the status quo as well as growing inequality coupled with a foolish minority entrusting a nefarious narcissist who couldn’t care less about them resulted in his victory in the 2016 election being more of a windfall than a mandate.

“Returning from Europe last weekend, White House aides had hoped to spin Donald Trump’s divisive meeting with President Vladimir Putin as a turning point for an administration whose agenda has been overshadowed by allegations of campaign collusion with Russia. “Let’s talk about how to move forward,” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had told the press on Friday, explaining that Trump had raised the issue of Russian election interference but was prepared to move on as partners in the war on terror and, improbably, on cybersecurity. “The question is what do we do now?” Instead, as the U.S. delegation flew back to Washington on Saturday, Trump’s inner circle reportedly found themselves huddled in the back of Air Force One, where they crafted a statement for Donald Trump Jr. to give The New York Times, explaining why he had met with Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya last June. According to people with knowledge of the discussion, the airborne group debated as to how transparent the statement should be, according to the Times’ Maggie Haberman and Peter Baker.

Not very, as it turned out.

The president signed off on a sparse statement that claimed the meeting was primarily focused on the issue of U.S.-Russian adoption—an explanation that quickly fell behind a fast-evolving story, as the Times followed up with a series of reports revealing that not only did Trump Jr. know that the point of the meeting was to obtain damaging information about Hillary Clinton, but that the promised dirt was said to come explicitly from the Russian government. Seeking to get ahead of the story, the president’s son on Tuesday released four pages of communications with Rob Goldstone, the intermediary who brokered the meeting with Veselnitskaya. In the e-mails, Goldstone says that the lawyer has negative information about Clinton that is part of the Russian government’s efforts to bolster Trump’s campaign. Trump Jr. responded with unfortunate enthusiasm: “I love it.”

Blindsided staffers are reportedly in panic mode after the latest revelation, which appears to substantiate some of the worst fears about the Trump campaign’s unsavory relationship with Russia. Many people within the White House had dismissed the Trump-Russia affair as “conspiracy bullshit,” one Trump adviser told Politico. Now, aides are “essentially helpless” to contain the fallout from a story that has its origins in the heady “anything goes” days of the campaign. Members of Trump’s inner circle are reportedly filled with paranoia and suspicion over the identities of the “three advisers to the White House” who were the sources for the blockbuster Times story…”

Who is heading the team?
Marc E. Kasowitz, the president’s longtime personal lawyer and his go-to guy for legal battles over the past 15 years. When special counsel Robert Mueller put the Russia investigation into high gear, Trump initially tried to hire at least four of the nation’s most prestigious law firms, with high-profile attorneys including former Solicitor General Ted Olson. But they all refused, according to a Yahoo News report, with the lawyers citing the difficulty of representing the mercurial Trump, who has a history of not paying bills. As one lawyer put it, “The guy won’t pay and he won’t listen.” So Trump has turned to his old buddy to defend him from the most dangerous legal challenge of his life. What is Kasowitz’s background?
The founding partner of Kasowitz Benson Torres, Kasowitz specializes in complex financial litigation — which is how he first met Trump. In 2001, the real estate mogul retained the $1,500-an-hour lawyer to represent him in an Atlantic City casino bankruptcy case. Kasowitz has since gone to court to protect Trump’s sealed divorce records from being opened; unsuccessfully defended Trump University from a fraud lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman; and represented him amid allegations of sexual assault. “Trump has always favored scrappy lawyers and street fighters,” says Trump biographer Timothy O’Brien, who has personally faced off against Kasowitz. “Kasowitz fits that profile.”

How does Kasowitz operate?
Described as one of the toughest lawyers in Manhattan, Kasowitz goes on the attack against his clients’ accusers. When Bill O’Reilly, another of his clients, was accused of sexual harassment by several Fox News colleagues, Kasowitz claimed that the TV host had “been subjected to a brutal campaign of character assassination…unprecedented in post-McCarthyist America.” And when Trump sued writer O’Brien for challenging the real estate mogul’s claim to be a billionaire in his 2005 biography, Kasowitz appeared at one of O’Brien’s book readings — filming the event while using audience “plants” to goad the author into making damaging statements, says O’Brien. “It’s just a trench fight with them,” says Roddy Boyd, another reporter who has battled with Kasowitz. “It’s brutal stuff.”

Who else is on the team?
Former prosecutor John Dowd, a veteran white-collar lawyer known for his work on the Keating Five scandal, will bring some Washington expertise to the team. But on TV at least, the public face of Trump’s Russia defense squad now appears to be Jay Sekulow, a lawyer for evangelical Christian groups and a conservative talk show regular. Sekulow serves as chief counsel for the American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ), a Christian-based nonprofit founded by televangelist Pat Robertson, and has argued 12 religious liberty cases before the Supreme Court. Sekulow, 61, was born to a Reform Jewish family in Brooklyn, and only became a Messianic Jew — or a “Jew for Jesus” — after attending Atlanta Baptist College. He has also defended organizations like the militant anti-abortion Operation Rescue…”

“When the president of the United States violates the Constitution there must be a way for a federal court to hear the case and provide a remedy. Three different lawsuits have been filed against President Trump claiming that he is violating the emoluments clauses of the Constitution by receiving unlawful payments or other benefits from foreign governments and from the United States.

Trump’s position is that the federal courts can hear none of these suits because no one has “standing” to sue him for these constitutional violations. But that can’t be right: It cannot be that the president can violate the Constitution with impunity and no court has the authority to hold him accountable.

Article I, Section IX of the Constitution prevents any person holding a federal office from receiving a “present” or “emolument … of any kind whatever” from a foreign state. This was meant to limit foreign influence in the U.S. by broadly forbidding elected or appointed officials from being obligated to another government.

Trump, because he hasn’t removed himself from his business empire, is constantly on the receiving end of benefits from foreign states.
