As his support drops to a new low, Trump makes history article from Rachel Maddow on MSNBC. –
http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/his-support-drops-new-low-trump-makes-history
Less than one year into his tenure, Trump is officially making records as the worst president in American history:
“As the first year of the Donald Trump presidency nears its end, most national polling puts his approval rating in the mid- to high-30s, which is roughly where it’s been since the summer. The latest national report from the Pew Research Center found that the Republican president has actually reached a new low, with his support dropping to just 32%.
To put that in context, among other presidents from this generation, Bill Clinton had the lowest approval rating at the end of his first year, and his support stood at 48% at this point in 1993. Trump is 16 points below that level, which is just embarrassing. The president wanted to make history, and he has, though probably not in the way he had in mind.
But going through the results, I was especially interested in the shifts in attitudes among traditional Trump supporters.
Currently, 76% of Republicans and Republican leaners approve of Trump’s job performance, compared with 84% who did so in February. […]…”

https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2017/12/11/donald-trump-should-more-like-fake-news-media-he-hates-jill-lawrence-column/938430001/
On the hypocrisy of our fake president’s war on fake news:
“President Trump in the last few days has demanded that reporters at ABC, CNN and The Washington Post be fired for committing “fake news.” The offenses ranged from incorrect dates on ABC and CNN stories that made them seem more significant than they were, to a photo that the Post’s David Weigel incorrectly said was evidence of a less than “packed” crowd at Trump’s speech in Pensacola, Fla., on Friday.
Trump demanded an apology and a retraction from Weigel on Saturday afternoon. Three minutes later, Weigel tweeted: “Sure thing: I apologize.” He said he had deleted the photo and explained, “Was confused by the image of you walking in the bottom right corner.” Apparently that wasn’t good enough; an hour later Trump tweeted: “FAKE NEWS, he should be fired.”
Here’s a thought experiment. What if Trump acted more like the media? ABC News made the most egregious error, imposed a four-week suspension on the offending reporter, and issued the most fulsome, contrite apology. That’s the model most appropriate for Trump. So, imagine:

Trump Takes a Stand on Corruption — by Withdrawing the US From Anti-Corruption Pact article from Truthout. –
http://www.truth-out.org/news/item/42864-trump-takes-a-stand-for-corruption-by-withdrawing-the-us-from-anti-corruption-pact
The most corrupt president in US history removes the US from the anti-corruption pact:
“The degree of corruption displayed by the Trump administration is on a scale that is hard to keep track of, and hits so close to home that we often forget about the wider global implications of having an incompetent, at best, and more likely a traitorous “president.” As many of us have realized since Day 1, the antics of the Distractor-in-Chief have served as excellent cover for his real agenda: covertly implementing pro-corporate policies.
In this vein, another international issue that flew under the radar recently was the withdrawal of the US last month from the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) as an implementing country. Through President Barack Obama, the US joined the “Anti-Corruption Pact,” as it has been called, in 2011.
Now, Trump’s hasty decision to pull out sends an unmistakable signal: corruption is tolerated if it helps line corporate pockets. According to Trump and lots of Republicans, anything regulating business is bad, even transparency. But the reality is that removing the US from EITI benefits no one.
Launched in 2002 by then UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, EITI helps address the systemic corruption in countries whose GDP relies primarily on resource extraction. More than 52 countries across the world have joined the pact, which imposes international standards on business transparency so as to hinder illicit payments such as bribes or other forms of corruption. The basic idea of the Anti-Corruption Pact is simple: if extractive firms and corporations are forced to publicly disclose their contributions to government, then citizens can hold them accountable. The agreement is designed to help countries avoid the perils of the so-called “resource curse” often faced by undeveloped, resource-rich nations…”

Don’t Cower Before Authoritarians and Liars article from Talking Points Memo. –
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/dont-cower-before-authoritarians-and-liars
On the importance of standing up to our Hitler-aspiring wannabe dictator and the liars in his White House that foolishly continue trying to protect him:
“Back on Friday, CNN’s Manu Raju made a major error in a report on emails tied to Wikileaks and Donald Trump Jr. As we discussed Friday afternoon, the nature of the error turned on the date of the email in question – September 4th versus September 14th. CNN had multiple sources read or describe the email to its reporter. But later in the afternoon, The Washington Post obtained the actual email, which was clearly dated the 14th. As noted, the difference was much more than the date. CNN corrected the story and had some pretty significant egg on its face.
Over the weekend in Mike Allen’s Axios newsletter he discussed this and two other stories. That’s what I want to talk about because I think it is an example of precisely what we should not, as journalists and citizens, be doing to respond to the civic menace of the Trump Presidency. The other flawed stories Allen mentioned were the ABC Brian Ross story which led to Ross’s suspension and then another by Bloomberg News about subpoenas to Deutsche Bank. I have a quibble on the latter piece. It’s not clear to me that story was actually wrong. As we noted, the White House denied the account but the bank likely would not have been allowed to tell them whether it was true or not.
But that’s not really the point. Though Allen is clearly on the right side of this argument, noting that the President is hostile to freedom of the press itself and the importance of preserving those freedoms. Yet he concludes with this …
Be smart: This is a battle of epic proportions. We have a president waging a relentless war against all media, minus Fox News and pro-Trump organs. The vast majority of one of our two political parties agrees with him and increasingly sees media as an enemy of the state. Only strong, responsible, accurate, non-hyperbolic journalism can withstand the assault. Make no mistake: This was a terrible week for the cause…”

Increasingly a Necessity: A 15-Point Guide to Surviving Authoritarianism article from Alternet. –
https://www.alternet.org/election-2016/increasingly-necessity-15-point-guide-surviving-authoritarianism
How to fight back against a lawless president who wants to be a dictator and his felonious administration:
“Nearly a year ago, intuitively recognizing the Trump administration’s authoritarian aspirations, Polish journalist and activist Martin Mycielski wrote “Year 1 Under Authoritarianism.” In those early, nerve-racking days following Trump’s inauguration, the piece was shared across social media, an ominous portent of what was to come. The document—helpfully subtitled, “What To Expect?”—offered a list of predictions and warnings about Trump’s first year in office, and exhortations to fight back at every turn. In his introduction, published just days after Trump’s inauguration, Mycielski noted the article was based on his own experience in Poland, where extreme-right nationalists have taken over the government, and in a recent ugly demonstration, the streets. The piece should be read as an instructive manual of sorts, culled from firsthand observation of the “populists, authoritarians and tinpot dictators” leading right-wing movements across Europe.
“With each passing day, the [Polish] government is moving the country further away from the liberal West and towards the authoritarian models of the East,” Mycielski wrote. “Hundreds of thousands have protested against every illiberal, unlawful step. Every time we believed it couldn’t get any worse. We were wrong. This is why we want you, our American friends, to be spared the shock, the awe, the disbelief of this happening to you. Let’s hope history proves us wrong and the US wakes up in time…[H]ope for the best, but prepare for the worst.”
Mycielski’s “survival guide” has only become more disturbingly relevant with time, its predictions proved frighteningly accurate. Like Umberto Eco’s guide to fascism, it presciently notes the actions and attitudes that now unquestionably define this presidency; the lies and obfuscation of truth, racist fear-mongering, historical revisionism, purposeful chaos and anti-First Amendment agenda. Manipulation and malice are the Trump regime’s forte. (To see how quickly a country can be remade by a charlatan and his abettors, go back and review some of the earliest entries from Amy Siskind’s weekly list tracking changes under Trump. It’s all pretty scary, especially seeing it unfold in real time.)
But if there’s any hope, it will only come from recognizing the reality of what’s happening here, how much damage is being done, how much earth already scorched. The year has somehow flown by, yet seemed interminable. It’s good to remember the very big, very frightening picture before us, how far we’ve already come, and to consider what recourse we have with complicit and corrupt forces standing in the way. —Kali Holloway…”

Trump’s FCC Has Spend the Year Waging War on Democracy and the Press article from Truthout. –
http://www.truth-out.org/news/item/42893-trump-s-fcc-has-spent-the-year-waging-war-on-democracy-and-the-press
Since our pathological peckerhead in the White House is losing his war on fake news, his corrupt FCC Chairman has been illicitly working to help him at our expense:
“On Tuesday, November 21, media advocates were incredibly busy. Just as they were packing up and logging out for the coming Thanksgiving holiday, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman and former Verizon attorney Ajit Pai released his plans to decimate net neutrality, which will be voted on Thursday, December 14. Advocates and the public rightly decried the fact that Pai tried to lessen the blowback from this aggressive and unpopular action by releasing the plan at that particular time.
Yet, choosing this timing was not even Pai’s most slimy, deceptive act that day. Also on November 21 — while media advocates were trying to respond to Pai’s plans to hand the internet to cable and telecom companies — he released an equally worrying statement on the FCC’s website about “reviewing” ownership restrictions for corporate media giants.
The word “review” is a little misleading. In reality, the statement “seeks to allow even greater media consolidation. Ignoring federal law…,” said FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn, a Democrat.
This is a frightening proposition, given that, thanks in large part to Bill Clinton’s Telecommunications Act of 1996, the ownership rules are already so relaxed that about 90 percent of the country’s major media companies are owned by six corporations. Further consolidation poses an existential threat to the capacity of media to serve a civic function (as opposed to simply a source of profit). However, the consolidation statement received little attention — a reality that holds true for most of the numerous and consequential actions taken by Pai this year. With the exception of net neutrality, which itself received much less coverage than it warranted, FCC actions tend to be ignored by almost all media but the business press…”

What Does Trump Mean by ‘Make America Great Again’? article from Common Dreams. –
https://www.commondreams.org/views/2017/12/14/what-does-trump-mean-make-america-great-again
Trump’s duplicitous actions and corrupt deeds contradict his dubious MAGA slogan:
“Donald Trump’s now ubiquitous slogan, “Make America Great Again!”, is often chanted at rallies, but rarely scrutinized in public discourse. What era in America’s past is Mr. Trump referring to when he says “Again”?
Would Mr. Trump prefer America return to the days of slavery, Jim Crow and labor exploitation in unsafe factories, mines, foundries and plantations? How about the late 19th century when “Robber Barons” monopolized one industry after another? Is he longing for the days when women were second-class citizens and couldn’t vote, until securing this right less than 100 years ago, only to still be paid lower wages than their male colleagues for performing the same jobs and faced with consumer and educational discrimination?
Or is Trump referring to a time when the US was less of a giant empire than it is today?
Or, more optimistically, in the nineteen sixties and early seventies when America had its highest real wages and a large trade surplus? Has anyone heard him say he wanted to return America to that prominence that peaked in the nineteen sixties?…”
