Imperial Presidency Impeachment Hearing

On July 25, 2008, in lieu of Impeachment, a hearing on the Imperial Presidency of George W. Bush will be held by The House Judiciary Committee at 10:00 a.m. For who knows what reason — some speculate that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has threatened House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers with losing his chairmanship and some claim it’s because Pelosi and other Congressional leaders who are just as guilty as Bush would be implicated, among other things — Senator Dennis Kucinich’s calls for impeachment will be turned into testimony about Bush’s ‘Imperial Presidency’ as well as several other Bush administration scandals, but in keeping with traditional Congressional complicity, there will be no vote for actual impeachment.

Treasonous acts committed by Presidents and the political establishment in Washington have occurred for decades, albeit probably never more obviously than they are now. An ironic, almost carbon copy example of history repeating itself can be found in a September 11, 1941 speech given by aviator Charles Lindbergh in Des Moines, Iowa. Lindbergh was referring to FDR’s administration but the vast majority of what he said easily applies to the Bush Administration. History has a bad habit of repeating itself. The words to his speech are available from The Holocaust Historiography Project and a video of it is available from YouTube.

A press release issued by Rep. John Conyers and The House Judiciary Committee says his panel will explore a variety of issues including manipulation of prewar Iraq intelligence, politicization of the Justice Department, and refusal to cooperate with Congressional investigations.

President Bush’s blatant misuse of executive privilege when covering questions to his subordinates about criminal behavior and other misadventures of he and his administration makes it unclear how much the Judiciary Committee’s inquiry will accomplish. Despite ruling out impeachment, Conyers said his committee would address “possible legal responses” to Bush’s “Imperial Presidency.”

More background information regarding the hearings can be found from The Daily Kos. The hearing is the result of H.R. 1345 being referred to the Judiciary Committee in a full House vote last week. H.R. 1345, introduced by Senator Kucinich who introduced 35 Articles of Impeachment last month, focuses narrowly on Bush administration claims that Saddam possessed Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) which led to the Iraq war, and that there was a connection between Saddam Hussein and 9/11 — both of which have proven false — relies heavily on the Downing Street Memo and is specifically about impeachment.

The Downing Street Memo details how Bush wanted to remove Saddam Hussein through military action — justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. The intelligence and facts were fixed around the policy. In other words they lied.

Allegations of Administration Misconduct

According to the press release, the Committee is expected to examine a range of legal and legislative responses to allegations of administration misconduct and their expansion of executive branch power including:

(1) improper politicization of the Justice Department and the U.S. Attorneys offices, including potential misuse of authority with regard to election and voting controversies

(2) misuse of executive branch authority and the adoption and implementation of the so-called unitary executive theory, including in the areas of presidential signing statements and regulatory authority

(3) misuse of investigatory and detention authority with regard to U.S. citizens and foreign nationals, including questions regarding the legality of the administration’s surveillance, detention, interrogation, and rendition programs

(4) manipulation of intelligence and misuse of war powers, including possible misrepresentations to Congress related thereto

(5) improper retaliation against administration critics, including: disclosing information concerning CIA operative Valerie Plame, and obstruction of justice related thereto

(6) misuse of authority in denying Congress and the American people the ability to oversee and scrutinize conduct within the administration, including through the use of various asserted privileges and immunities.

There are many more reasons to both impeach and imprison Bush and his administration, but it’s a start. The July 25 hearing will be held at 10:00 a.m. in room 2141 of the Rayburn House Office Building. There are links below to more information if anyone is interested in participating or being there.

The 110th Congress, currently in session, recently passed (again) illegal, unconstitutional legislation designed to cover up Presidential crimes committed with their blessings and is currently led by House Speaker Pelosi whose personal involvement in allowing torture among other things has repeatedly stated that Impeachment is off the table. Speaker Pelosi’s susceptibility to Impeachment might have something to do with her decision. The blatant disregard for American citizens and the Constitution by the 110th Congress is unacceptable. Congress has repeatedly ignored their constituents and what they want, preferring instead to keep political harmony.

Unfortunately, Bush and his cronies will probably never be held criminally liable for their multiple crimes and treasonous actions — since above all else, no matter what kind of change Senator Obama keeps talking about, his actions show just how much of a typical Washington politician he is and Senator John McCain, who can’t figure out which lie to tell next, would most likely keep the crimes hidden and not hold Bush and his cronies accountable —  but maybe we can find out just how low the level of corruption in Bush’s White House goes. And to think that this all began thanks to five corrupt Supreme Court Justices who decided to appoint Bush back in 2000… More information on why Washington needs to be held accountable can be found at Accountability Now PAC | StrangeBedfellows or by clicking one of the banners at the end of this post.

George W. Bush’s sentence-by-sentence speaking skills are deteriorating. Apparently, this may be due to a mental illness called “presenile dementia.” Bush may or may not be secretly still drinking heavily. Bush lied, and thousands of people died. Bush suffers from narcissism and megalomania. Moreover, Bush has been arrested three times. Bush was arrested for disorderly conduct. Bush was arrested for stealing. Bush was also arrested for a serious crime—driving under the influence of alcohol. There are reasons to believe that Bush suffers from a learning disability. Bush’s learning disability would explain a lot of things. All in all, Bush is a severely mentally ill individual. Bush is not fit to be the president of the United States.

    Bush should be locked up.
